Thailand ranks 2nd in the world for the most 7-11's in the country. Belgium might not have any, but Suan Thai sure makes a good substitute.
As an international Thai student living in Ghent, finding familiar tastes from home can be a real comfort. That’s why Suan Thai (Thai Garden) has become one of my favorite places in the city. This family-run business has been around since 1996 and has long been a trusted spot for anyone passionate about Asian cooking.
Suan Thai started as a small specialty shop right in the center of Ghent. At the time, Thai cuisine wasn’t widely known in Belgium, so opening such a niche store was a bold move. With the growing interest in Asian food, the store gradually expanded; it is now a well-loved destination for anyone looking to explore authentic Asian flavours.

While Suan Thai focuses on Thai products, it also offers a broad selection of Filipino, Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese ingredients. What I really appreciate is their attention to quality and freshness; they stock daily Thai vegetables, fruits, and other regional items that are hard to find elsewhere.
The staff are incredibly helpful and always willing to assist with finding the right ingredients or helping put together a meal. Whether you're a beginner or someone who cooks Asian food regularly, they make you feel welcome and supported.
Personally, I go to Suan Thai not just for cooking essentials but also for a little taste of home. When I crave snacks that are usually only accessible from Seven Elevens back in Thailand, I make a detour to Suan Thai to pick up my favorite Oishi (Thai tea) or Thai Lay’s. It’s those little things that bring comfort; Suan Thai makes them accessible right here in Ghent.
If you're looking to cook Asian food or simply want to explore the flavors of Thailand and beyond, Suan Thai is truly a gem worth visiting.
