Sawadee Ka! (Hello in Thai)

My name is Evi Apitchaya Willaert. As you might have guessed, my name sounds quite Belgian; except for my middle name, which reveals my Thai roots. I was born and raised in Phuket, Thailand. The photo on the left shows my home and favourite place to spend time with friends. As you can imagine, moving to Ghent, Belgium, was quite a drastic environmental change.

I’m currently studying abroad here in Ghent as an international student; I truly love Belgium! After all, I am half Belgian, thanks to my father. Still, there are moments when I feel a little out of place, missing the cultural richness of Thailand: the flavours, the scents, the food, and the vibrant atmosphere. These are things that are hard to explain unless you've experienced the Land of Smiles firsthand.

Therefore, I decided to share pieces of Thailand that I’ve found in Ghent through my passions: writing and watercolour painting. I’m creating a small hub for those who miss the taste of Thailand; or for anyone who simply loves Thai culture; to explore and experience these elements right here in Belgium.

Working in a Thai restaurant has shown me just how big and connected the Thai community in Ghent really is; and it's not just Ghent, Thai communities are thriving across Belgium and all over Europe.

I hope you enjoy reading my articles about the many Thai restaurants, supermarkets, gyms, and massage shops Ghent has to offer. All seen through the eyes of a Thai international student. No need to scroll through TripAdvisor; what you’ll find here are honest, heartfelt insights.

Enjoy, and Kob Khun Ka! (Thank you in Thai)
